Tired after a stressful week? Relax. Watch a movie. Yeah right!!!

Why has trying to understand the plot of a movie become as cruel as forcing a 5 year old to learn calculus? I just watched Memento. And I have a headache. Most of today’s movies are all about confusing and messing up the brain. I watch movies to escape reality. But now they’re all too real. It’s bad enough we have ample situations of complexity in our lives. Why would we want to pay money to watch it on screen too? Murders, stealing, adultery, suicide… all these are borrowed from life. 5 years ago, I would have been amazed by such movies. Wow, I would wonder. How did they ever think of something like that? But now I have my own problems. I want to watch a movie only to feel good. However, there are people who truly love these movies. Do they lead such simple happy lives that these movies are a mode of cheap thrill? I’ve decided that from now on I’m only going to watch movies that either have Ben Stiller or Meg Ryan in them. Or else, it’s cartoons for me.

You didn't like "Memento"? i really liked it! such a paradigm shift from the routine cops and aliens stuff...

plus it's got Carrie-Anne Moss (that settles it)...

I didn't say that I did not like it. I just had to put way too much effort into following the plot. It was like... you blink and you miss something. Apparently, I did blink during one scene and missed something too.

I did not know Guy Pearce looked so hot. The two scratches down his left cheek was especially sexy!

Ya... I had to see it twice too... backward-suspense!! what a concept no?

Insomnia is also kind of different but not THAT great...

Pata nahin. I'm not too fond of movies that need to be watched more than once to really "get it". That's why I didn't bother to finish watching The Matrix.

For example, when you watch Pulp Fiction or The Sixth Sense, they are confusing too. But the last scenes pull everything together so beautifully. And there's this excitement of having understood the movie at last and you are left feeling that you watched a great movie. But with Memento, you feel it's a good movie, but you are still not too sure about everything. There isn't that complete satisfaction. It's almost like... hmmm... I've got an analogy but it's a little inappropriate ;) I'm sure you get what I'm saying.

At June 27, 2005 2:34 am, Blogger Vaibhav said...

uh... if i am getting your analogy correctly... you should definately watch the movie again!! Till you get it! ;)

Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe!!! I think I may have woken up my neighbours because I really 'LOL'ed. I was sure you, of all people, would get it ;) my analogy, I mean :p

Memento wasn't that hard to understand, was it? Mulholland Drive is far more of a mindjob.

And Ms. V: You couldn't understand The Matrix???

Some people like watching movies to escape from the mundane. And lets face it: murder, suicide etc are part of the glamour of fiction.

And some people (like me) enjoy a slice of reality for time to time (such people avoid Hindi movies like the plague)!

It takes all kinds to make a world.

There was nothing to understand The Matrix. I fell asleep after half hour of it, and there seems to be no incentive whatsoever to attempt to watch it again. Unless of course I'm having a tough time falling asleep :p

Antrix, so kind of you to grace my blog :p I thought you didn't live on Earth anymore!!!

I think he means 'worst'! But it's been so long since he's been in touch with me that I may have forgotten his lingo. So, until he graces this blog again, which may be never, you'll have to wait. Or just be happy with my translation!

Yowaaan: Where did you watch Memento? was it when i saw it in JPJ's room in Muk East? I can't remember (ironic eh?) who i saw it with and what we discussed about it afterwards...

At June 27, 2005 11:49 pm, Blogger Yohan said...

I saw in in the film appreciation course, in the JCR.

Carrie-Ann Moss wan't in Memento.

Ms. V...is it that you don't like action movies? You're the only one I've met who doesn't like the Matrix.

At June 27, 2005 11:53 pm, Blogger LovingAndLosing said...

Okay Yohan. You've not seen Memento then!!!

And no, I like action movies. I LOVE Die Hard, Saving Private Ryan, The One etc.

I just don't like The Matrix. And come on, I can't be the only one! Are there no sane people left???

At June 27, 2005 11:59 pm, Blogger Yohan said...

Oops...it's been a while since I saw it.

Worsht...I assumed it meant "what shit".

Anyway...I know even my dad liked the Matrix, and he doesn't go fdor the run-of-the mill action hoohah.

Think of yourself as unique. Sane you are clearly not!

My playlist was just playing "It's been a while" by 'Staind' when I read your comment!

Okay, seriously, what about the movie is great? The action sequences were unique when it first released, true, but the plot was absolutely ridiculous, to say the least!!!

At June 28, 2005 12:09 am, Blogger Yohan said...

I'm going to try very hard not to be condescending here.

To cut a long story short, The Matrix, apart from introducing ground-breaking special effects, had a story with enough metaphorical value to keep the intellectuals happy and philosophizing. Lots of Zen Buddhist and CHristian mystic elements (not kidding). If you require more...do a google search!

(No offense. I'm a nerd.)

At June 28, 2005 12:16 am, Blogger LovingAndLosing said...

NO. Here's where I give credit to the script writer and director. They made you all believe that there is something worth philosophizing about! What amuses me is that the entire world fell for it.

I'm a nerd too, but I'm not stupid :p

At June 28, 2005 12:24 am, Blogger Vaibhav said...

you don't remember Carrie-Anne Moss? What the heck were you "appreciating" in the movie man!

As for the Matrix, it was the first movie i liked instantly... belive it or not... before that I didn't have any favourite movies... remember MAdhu going on the Neo/Matrix binge... for once i totally got what he was talking about...

You can like it for the cool action scenes... you can alo like it for the philo thing... it puts a question mark on reality (w/o drugs I might add) so the wildest stuff is acceptable.

tada...

At June 28, 2005 12:32 am, Blogger Yohan said...

Good lord.

Ms. V...I can't reply to your comment politely. So we shall agree to disagree.

(I must keep reminding myself that you're a Bryan Adams fan...or I'll go mad.)

Tawaks is very cleverly sitting this debate out.

Er...so what else is new? I'm heading home tomorrow. Far from the Madding Crowd and all.

At June 28, 2005 12:38 am, Blogger LovingAndLosing said...

What question mark? There is no question mark!!! Grrr. Ohh, never mind. It's me against the world. Fine. The Matrix rocks. In that regard, so does the Titanic. *blech*

At June 28, 2005 12:44 am, Blogger Yohan said...

No no no. Each to his own.

For example...I like the Pink Panther movies, and none of my firends did. I loved Mars Attacks, and Legally Blonde, and my friends grimaced.

And I can't read more than a page of The Catcher in the Rye without getting bugged. Most of my friends get all misty-eyed about it.

Our likes and dislikes are what make us human. Debating is just our way of confirming our individuality!

At June 28, 2005 12:51 am, Blogger LovingAndLosing said...

Oh, come on. You couldn't believe I was serious about that, could you? I still think The Matrix sucks. And as for the people who like The Matrix (i.e. the whole world!), let's just say I'm glad that for the people I like, there are things about them that I like enough to be able to overlook the fact that they're stupid :p And as for those I don't like, just another reason not to like them!

At June 28, 2005 1:02 am, Blogger Yohan said...

Oooh. I wish I could use words like "stupid" and get away with them.

But I'm too nice a guy. So I'll just say "Bryan Adams" instead, and think of pots calling kettles black.

Toodles!

It's my niceness that made me stop at stupid :p

And you just don't want to admit that BA songs are good. Some of his songs are awesome. You've probably not even heard them :p

I wouldn't know because I haven't exactly watched it. But if you have, we're going to have to talk about a few things :p

At June 28, 2005 2:38 am, Blogger Yohan said...

For the record I've heard loads of Bryan Adams...before I reached the discerning age of 15.

At this rate I hope I get invited to the wedding.

Tawakley, I'm assuming you're saving up, so you'll be able to offer us the expensive liquor. My vote is for scotch.

Ms. V, you can provide us with Canadian Bacon at the post-bachelor party brunch, and then we'll all listen to Bryan Adams and hurl.

At June 28, 2005 2:46 am, Blogger LovingAndLosing said...

Oh no! These things have not been discussed. Am I going to have to deal with drunk people at the wedding? And I completely overlooked the carnivore aspect!

Yohan, your heavy metal bands have distorted your ear-drums. So I can do nothing but feel sorry for you.

I don't listen to heavy metal madam. Not at all.

Don't get so riled up! We're all frendz4ever right? :)

oh V, so what if I don't comment here everyday.. you know I keep thinking of you all the time ;)

vaibhav: as V said.. worsht is a tam-kannadiga mish-mash accented version of worst. you have to really stress on the rsh like worrrssshhht. Makes worse sound worse ;) yeah.. so carrie ann moss looked like crap in that movie.

yohan: find better things to do than argue movies with V.

what's all this marriage talk?

Ms. V, u never told me abt marriage !!! The last I heard was cyber flirt v2 and now, its on a post bachelorette party! Whats goin on ur highness? You owe me an explanation for ditching me !!!

One thing I got from the matrix..if u put in something tht no one understands clearly, then each one will form their own opinion and u will get a 1001 meanings out of it! Thats how it succeeded. No wonder ppl said if u cant convince, confuse..it sure works!

Vibes, I checked out the site. It's pretty cool! I'm at college so I'm waiting till I get home to continue the adventure :D Also, I hope you realize how lucky you got :p

Antrix, you smooth talker you :p I still fall for it though. Sigh! Where are you now? In India? See, I don't even know anymore :( And yes, Carrie-Anne Moss did look like shit in the movie. But why wouldn't I think that ;) As for the marriage talk, well, it's about time, isn't it? And you didn't seem to be interested anyway!

RA, I've got a very good explanation. How about the fact that you were two-timing me??? I still agree with your explanation about The Matrix though. 'Confuse the viewers' seems to have become the magic formula in movie making.

And Ram (gosh it feels so weird to call you that... it's my dad's name!!!), trust me, that's probably one of my shortest posts ever! I usually ramble enough such that no number of comments put together can beat it's size! :D
